Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) present a growing threat to not only military operations in conflict zones but to humanitarian operations as well. IED detection is a method of proactive risk mitigation that can save lives, dollars, and keep humanitarian and military efforts safely engaged in an area to complete critical work.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal
The first group anyone thinks of when they hear IED is the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technicians across every branch of the military whose job it is to disarm/dispose of mines, bombs, and other explosive materials. With the restriction on the use of foreign manufactured drones for military/federal use the few existing UAV’s dealing with IED’s many of which are Chinese manufactured are soon to be banned.
As of 2014 IED's made up a significant portion of the security challenges facing NGOs in conflict areas with a total of 122 staff and volunteers injured/killed in Arghansitan alone making up 1/3 of global NGO IED casualties.
How It Works
Using Non-detectable - EMI resistant communications and GPR (ground penetrating radar) the Countermine Drone detects buried landmines without setting off RF detonated mines. Upon detection the drone will take recordings of the area where the IED/Mine was detected, geotag the location and remit the data to the predetermined authorities; and where necessary or desired perform live streaming to a predetermined emergency operator / EOD center / local authority.
